The Setup
Not every cook ends pretty. Last night the wind kicked up mid-smoke and turned my perfect brisket into a cautionary tale. Mike tried to rescue it with optimism and beer. Neither helped.
The Stir
We scraped off the bark and laughed at the ruins. I wanted to sulk, but he shrugged. “Every pitmaster’s got a ghost brisket,” he said. “Welcome to the club.” That line stuck with me. We talk about success like it’s the trophy, but the truth is failure’s the real membership card.
The Flip
Later, while cleaning the grate, I thought about all the things I’ve overcooked in life: friendships, plans, moments I should’ve just let rest. Maybe the smoke knows better than we do when it’s time to walk away.
The Rave
The brisket was dry, but the laughter was juicy. That counts for something. Stay patient, stay spicy — Barbie Q
